EdShed Phonics and Spelling has a wide range of games designed to support students' reading and spelling journeys. We know that the most effective learning is fun, which is why we've created a series of online and offline games to be played alongside our teaching programme, transforming practice into an adventure.
There are games for each grapheme-phoneme correspondence (GPC), spelling practice games, vocabulary games and bonus games.
EdShed games provide a multi-sensory style of learning as well as a valuable opportunity to practise spelling and phonics in a relaxed and encouraging environment. Through repetition and instant feedback, students solidify their phonemic knowledge and understanding of spelling patterns and word meanings, building confidence and accuracy. Data from the games feeds into a handy data report, which can be accessed by teachers, allowing them to identify common spelling misconceptions.
Phonics Games can be found in the Phonics Shed garden. Once logged in, children navigate their way through the interactive Phonics Shed garden, completing games as they progress from pre-reading skills sequentially through more challenging grapheme-phoneme correspondence activities.
In Toybox Games, children explore and learn at their own pace. Students can make use of an interactive keyboard and a sound recorder. They also have the opportunity to practise matching our Characters to the phonemes they represent.
Sound Games offer the opportunity to learn the sounds found in words and test students' knowledge. The Sound Games include first and last sounds, sounding out, matching graphemes and Indy Pop, a game that allows students to listen to a sound and then pop the balloon with the corresponding grapheme.
In Vocabulary Games, children learn how words relate to each other and test their vocabulary. In 'Dare in the Air' students' must tap or click to keep Dare the Hare in the air, popping the correct graphemes as Dare flies. In 'Match Words', children flip the cards and match the words to their sounds.
Spelling Bee is the original Spelling Shed game. In this game, a word and its definition are read aloud. Click the honeycomb tiles to spell the word or use the tiles as a prompt and type the word.
In Penalty Spell-Out, you must shoot the balls into the net in order to correctly spell the word and score a goal. Again, either click the letter tiles or use the balls as a prompt and type the word.
Practise spelling by feeding these hungry horses. In this game, a word and a definition are given. Feed the hungry horses by selecting the correct letters or graphemes to spell the word.
Practise spelling by loading the empty truck with beehives. Load the truck by selecting the correct beehive or by typing the appropriate letter to load the beehive onto the truck.
The Missing Word game helps boost vocabulary acquisition. In this game, you are presented with a sentence containing a missing word. You must spell the correct word to fill in the gap in the sentence.
The Definitions game helps boost vocabulary acquisition. Earn points by choosing the correct word for the definition shown.
Bee Keeper is a hangman-style game where you have to guess the letters of a word before you lose all the bees. The fewer wrong letters you choose, the more bees you save.
It's you against the clock. Buzz Words gives you a random selection of letters and/or graphemes and you have to spell as many different words as you can within the time limit.
Avoid the lava and beat Chipper. The Squirrel Scurry game allows you to play solo or against the computer, choose to reach the top or enjoy endless game play. After a word is presented with its definition, you must correctly type the word to allow your squirrel to climb the rope and avoid the lava. One misspelled word will cause your squirrel to fall into the lava, so watch out!
Grammar Arcade is the game-changing platform for students to improve their grammar skills while having fun! You'll find a treasure trove of arcade-style games designed to transform grammar practice into an exhilarating adventure. Grammar Arcade is included in your EdShed Phonics and Spelling subscription.
Balance treats on the nose of the well-behaved dog. Give the perfect pup all of the treats. The perfect pup will be the answer to each question. Try to reach the end without losing treats to naughty dogs.
Solve the maze and avoid the ghosts. Move around the spooky maze and find the room that answers the question at the top of the screen. Look out! The mouse is terribly afraid of ghosts!
Ready for a fishing challenge? Tap or click your mouse to catch a fish. Answer questions to build up power and reel them in. Bigger fish take more power to catch but are worth more honeypots. How much can you score with four tiles?
Test your knowledge to win big! Answer the hippo’s questions to fill the honey jar. Each correct answer in a row will earn you more and more honey. The amount increases with each consecutive correct answer. All the honey collected in the jar will be rewarded as honeypots.
Add brackets to sentences with the mechanical claw. Use the claw to pinch the extra information in each sentence. Drag the arms of the mechanical claw. Press the claw’s nose to submit your answer.
Pirates are invading! Puncture their sails with proper punctuation. Aim and click to fire the cannon at parts of the sentence that need correcting. Look at your cannonballs to see which punctuation mark will fire from the cannon next. Blue cannonballs add a punctuation mark to the sentence. Red cannonballs replace a punctuation mark or character in a sentence.
Complete the sentences to give sweet dreams to the snoozing bear. Use the mouse to drag dream bubbles into the dream cloud to complete the sentence. Avoid having a bad dream all night to earn bonus honeypots.
My class loves using the programme. Learning while 'gaming' doubles the fun!

The big change I noticed as a class teacher was the enthusiasm for learning spellings and the weekly Hive game was anticipated with excitement by the children. EdShed Phonics and Spelling has given me a system that encourages children to learn spellings and the results in the hive games are showing they have done so.

There is great engagement in spelling, particularly with the interactive games at home. If you are thinking of subscribing, it's a no-brainer!

My class is very competitive and we have a challenge each week to see how many Royal Bees we can get. The class rose to the challenge and their spelling is improving as a result. The online games engage students as they enjoy spending time on them. They love how each week they need to work up the levels on their new spelling list.
Teacher, Consett Junior School
The games are great fun and the children are engaged. Children are actually learning their spellings as well as using them. They love the leagues and are trying to be the top-ranked player. Workload has significantly improved, as I now only have to spend 5 minutes prepping spellings for the whole week and 5 minutes setting homework rather than hours.
